Well, after 20 years of waiting, Pat Methany is finally playing here in Adelaide Australia. Looking forward to hearing his music but also looking forward to seeing some of Linda Manzer's amazing creations.

Stay posted for a post concert report on the man and more importantly his guitars

Okay...just back from the concert.

Pat Methany was playing with Christian McBride on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums. Music played was a mix pof mainly new unreleased and largely unamed pieces and a few oldies.

The guitars were as amazing as the music.....a really unusual sounding baritone Steel string (a Manzer I think) played with an open tuning of some sort. Second up was my favourite....the 5 necked monster Linda manzer built for Pat with the only design constraint being "build me an instrument with as many necks and strings as possible. Third up was a nice looking Manzer classical with a Florentine cut away. The rest of the concert was done with Methany's L5(?) Gibson and his Roland(?) guitar synth.

A great night out but my wife was giving me a very worried look when she saw my eyes light up as the 5 neck special made it's appearance. She obviously thinks Im going to attempt to make one.....

Hmmm .. open tuning on the bari huh ?? Maybe its somethign new, do you know which tunes he played on it ??? The tuning used on the One Quiet Night solo CD is low to high A D G C E A, (std intervals down a 4th) with the 3rd and 4th strings nashvilled, ie up an octave. Thats on a 28 inch scale. The 42 string 3 neck guitar is the Pikasso.

The Pikasso's fantastic, isn't it? I had the pleasure of seeing him about 8 years ago in a small-ish Jazz club in Paris, and as soon as that guitar came out, the room got quiet, and everyone sat up a little straighter to get a better look at the instrument. Fantastic moment.

One Quiet Night, a solo album to showcase the Manzer Baritone, is a regular on my player when in the shop. Great Inspiratation!

Manzer brought her "Pikasso II" (one she made after Metheny's) to the '95 ASIA Symposium, and had it on her display table. Pretty impressive bit of engineering. Gotta admire a mind like that.

Cant remember which tunes he p;ayed on the Picasso....there were two, one of them unreleased and not yet named.

Three necks on the Picasso......I guess Im counting the two drone string "outriggers" off the tail of the guitar as two more necks.

The baritone took a bit of getting used to.....some wird chords being played with alot of dissonance going on. Thought the thing was out of tune at first but once I got used to it it sounded great.

I remember Linda telling the story about how she sweated stringing up the original to concert pitch for the first time. She was so afraid it would implode/explode that she put on a helmet and facial shield....

I never wore a face sheild or goggles, but for about the first month after I built number 1 I was always amazed everytime I opened the case and it was still in one piece. To this day nothing has ripped off !!!!

One of my clients and best friends (he actually became ordained in the state of NY to marry my wife and I) teaches Pat's little son to play guitar. Now that has got to be a scary gig. He told me he was hanging out with Pat when his son walked in, my friend asked who was the better guitarist? Pat's son naturally said he was but his dad was pretty good! I love that story. If it's true the kid must be a monster!!!

Just reading a review of the concert in the local newspaper...they talk about the Picasso having "30 strings and 2 necks". makes you wonder if the reviewer actually attended the concert.

Feel the same everytime I open up the case and get out my first steel string. 2 years now and nothing has moved at all...truss rod hasnt even needed tweaking. probably more a product of sheer good luck than anything!!
